Androgyny Image

This 1957 Keystone Press Agency Photo shows Bengali refugees in Calcutta, squatting at a railway station in hopes of receiving aid. Most of these refugees were ethnic Hindus from Pakistan who fled in search of asylum and prosperity in India. Having been forced from their homes twice and then afflicted with disease and hunger, this group was wholly dehumanized and dispossessed of their homes, health and their identities as mothers, fathers, sons or daughters; rich or poor, old or young, male or female.
